ABOUT ME
My name is Nikki and I am a self-taught needle felt artist.
Needle Felting is the art of taking freeform wool and using specially barbed needles to create a sculptured object. I find it very relaxing and what started as a hobby two years ago, has now become very much a small business venture.
I live on the Wirral which has everything I could possibly need to fuel my imagination and creativity. The stunning coastline and ever-changing parks and woodland, along with my two children and our crazy Cockapoo offer up every facet of inspiration for my work.
THE CREATIVE PROCESS
I begin my creations with a planning sketch. I never know when I will feel creative, so I carry a little notebook with me everywhere. This is an invaluable tool for getting all those ideas out of my head and onto paper. It also helps me to decide whether a design will be visually appealing before I put needle to wool.
Once I have a good feeling about a design, I set about choosing my palette of colours from a large selection of wools. I use natural wools, blended fibres and sometimes even silk. I would like to say I favour a particular wool, but it is the variety of wools that make each creation so unique and help bring different creatures to life.
I love to incorporate natural materials into my work wherever I can. I use fallen wood and driftwood found on our local beach for many of my pieces. I take inspiration from the colours of the changing seasons, often taking many photographs on my dog walks and incorporating them into my design ideas later on.
